Federalist No. 16, written by Alexander Hamilton, is part of the Federalist Papers, a collection of 85 essays. The essays were written by Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Federalist No. 16 was published on December 4, 1787, in The New York Packet under the name Publius. The essays aimed to support the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, particularly in New York. They were addressed to the people of New York and sought to explain and defend the new government structure.
