Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller (1890-1976) was born in Torquay, Devon, daughter of a wealthy American stockbroker; her father died when she was eleven, and her mother taught her at home. In 1914 she married aviator Colonel Archibald Christie and wrote her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920), while working as a nurse during the war. She wrote over 66 novels and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971.
