On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, Chanel Rylan was killed when someone stabbed her with an ice pick. Her best friend, who had stepped out of the theater for a moment, found the scene surreal, but Chanel's death was real. Detective Eve Dallas investigates the murder, which seems carefully planned but deeply personal. She receives a tip from a police thriller author who recognizes the crime from her own book. A recent strangulation of a sex worker also matches a scene from the author's work. Dallas suspects the killer is inspired by the author's imagination, possibly starting a series. While she and her husband, Roarke, use their time together to read mystery stories for research, the killer is preparing for the next victim. Dallas must stop the killer before the next murder happens.
