About “Sea of Poppies”

Set just before the Opium Wars, this novel centers on the old slave ship the Ibis and its voyage across the Indian Ocean, carrying a mixed crew of sailors, stowaways, and convicts. Amid colonial upheaval, a diverse cast including a bankrupt raja, a widowed village woman, a mulatto American, and an opium trader come to see themselves as ship-brothers.
