About “River of Smoke”

In September 1838, a storm on the Indian Ocean strikes the Ibis, a ship carrying convicts and indentured laborers, and five men disappear. The novel follows the Anahita, an opium carrier heading to Canton, and the Redruth sailing from Cornwall, as characters including opium merchant Bahram Modi, his son Ah Fatt, and orphan Paulette converge in Canton amid the trade of opium for tea, silk, and silver.
