In 21st century Tokyo, after the millennial quake, Colin Laney, an intuitive fisher for patterns of information, is looking for work that makes him useful to certain people. Chia McKenzie, fourteen, is on a rescue mission for her idol, the singer Rez. Rei Toei is the idoru, a beautiful, entirely virtual media star adored by all Japan, whom Rez has declared he will marry, putting all their lives in danger.
