Stephen Edwin King, born on September 21, 1947, is an American author known for his work in the genres of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, crime, science-fiction, and fantasy. He has written 63 novels, including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman, and five non-fiction books. King has also authored approximately 200 short stories, many of which have been collected in book form. His works have sold more than 350 million copies, and many have been adapted into films, television series, miniseries, and comic books. King has received numerous awards, including Bram Stoker Awards, World Fantasy Awards, and British Fantasy Society Awards. He was awarded the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2003 and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2004. In 2007, he received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America, and in 2015, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. He is often referred to as the "King of Horror," a nod to his name and his prominent place in popular culture.
