Sir Arthur Charles Clarke CBE FRAS was a British science fiction writer, science writer, futurist, inventor, and undersea explorer. He is best known as co-writer of the screenplay for the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is regarded as one of the most influential films in history. Clarke wrote over a dozen books and many essays on space travel and futurism, and he was awarded the Kalinga Prize by UNESCO in 1961 for popularizing science. His science fiction works earned him multiple Hugo and Nebula awards, and he was considered one of the "Big Three" of science fiction alongside Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. Clarke proposed a satellite communication system using geostationary orbits in 1945 and was chairman of the British Interplanetary Society in the 1940s and 1950s. He emigrated to Sri Lanka in 1956, where he discovered the underwater ruins of the Koneswaram temple. He later hosted television shows, including Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. He lived in Sri Lanka until his death in 2008. Clarke was appointed CBE in 1989 and was knighted in 1998. He was also awarded Sri Lanka's highest civil honor, Sri Lankabhimanya, in 2005.
