The Firstborn, an alien race known for building the black monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey, appear in the Time Odyssey series by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. In Time's Eye and Sunstorm, the aliens create a fragmented world called Mir, where historical figures and modern humans coexist. Bisesa Dutt, a UN peacekeeper, communicates with an alien artifact and returns to Earth, helping to prevent a solar storm. Now, twenty-seven years later, the Firstborn return with a powerful quantum bomb aimed at Earth. Bisesa travels to Mars and Mir to find answers, facing an almost certain destruction. As she uncovers more about the Firstborn, an unexpected ally emerges from deep space.
