Old William Faraday died of natural causes, while another man was murdered. Mr. Campion and his family have returned to Pontisbright, along with Magersfontein Lugg and DCI Charles Luke. Though danger is common in the village, it is less dramatic than before. Minnie and Tonker Cassands prepare for their annual party at The Beckoning Lady, but Minnie faces serious issues with the Inland Revenue. The dead man in the ditch is a tax inspector. Mr. Campion faces Superintendent Fred South, a formidable opponent from "Safer than Love." Meanwhile, Charlie Luke becomes infatuated with an unsuitable girl.
