In this 1994 science fiction novel by Stephen Baxter, Michael Poole's wormholes, built in Jupiter's orbit, opened the galaxy to humankind, until Poole looped one back on itself and vanished. Later, from a far future when stars are dying, an SOS arrives describing an immense artifact fabricated from cosmic string, and a doomed universe with a door left open.
