The Eqbas have arrived on Earth, bringing both justice and destruction. They seek to punish humans for causing the near extinction of an ocean-dwelling race on Cavanagh's Star, but they also aim to save Earth from environmental collapse, a mission that could lead to the death of billions. Former police officer Shan Frankland, along with her two lifemates, has returned. She carries a parasite in her blood that makes her nearly immortal.
