The 1981 novel by Cynthia Voigt begins with James Tillerman telling his older sister, Dicey, "It's still true" each morning. This phrase reflects the reality that their mother left them in a mall parking lot in Connecticut, and the four siblings must find their way to Great-aunt Cilla's house in Bridgeport. They live with the constant need to save money, avoid attention from authorities, and stay together by moving forward. Dicey hopes to find someone who will care for them, but she fears such hope may be too much to expect. The story marks the start of a Newbery-winning series.
