The crew of the starship Nightflyer heads into the outer reaches of known space in search of a legendary alien race known as the volcryn, led by Karoly d'Branin and captained by the mysterious Royd Eris, who appears only as a hologram. As the explorers begin to feel watched and macabre accidents befall them one by one, it is unclear whether someone else is on board.
