Dr. Ethan Urquhart is an obstetrician on the planet Athos, where women are forbidden. Despite this, he is one of the busiest men on the planet until a genetic crisis threatens the survival of Athos. He is sent on a mission to find new ovarian tissue cultures, leading him to encounter women for the first time. Along the way, he teams up with Elli Quinn, a Dendarii Mercenary Commander and intelligence officer. Quinn has her own reasons for helping Ethan and becomes involved with him. The story is part of the Vorkosigan Saga and was written by Lois McMaster Bujold in 1986.
