This novel continues the story of two Transylvanian cousins. Balint Abady is forced to part from the unhappily married Adrienne Uzdy, while Laszlo Gyeroffy heads toward self-destruction through drink and his own fecklessness, as quarrelling politicians ignore their countrymen's needs while events like Austria's 1908 annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina move the Great Powers closer to the conflict of 1914-1918.
