About “Out of the Silent Planet”

Out of the Silent Planet is the first book in C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy. It follows Dr. Elwin Ransom, a philologist who travels through the English countryside. While seeking shelter, he arrives at the home of a colleague who is away. The house is not empty, and Ransom uncovers a plot by a megalomaniacal scientist and his old schoolmate. He is drugged, kidnapped, and taken to the planet Malacandra in a rocket. There, he is meant to be a human sacrifice but escapes into the planet's wilderness. Ransom encounters the inhabitants of Malacandra, who are different from what his captors believed. Through his experiences, he gains insights into the universe and Earth's place in it. The 1938 novel explores themes of discovery and the unknown.
