The starship USS Rhea discovers a cluster of carbon planets emitting quantum energies. A landing party encounters unusual life-forms on one planet. Lieutenant T'Ryssa Chen, a half-Vulcan officer, attempts to connect with the life-forms. The Rhea is attacked by the Einstein, a Starfleet vessel controlled by the Borg. The Borg assimilate the crew, and the Einstein descends to the planet. Just as Chen prepares to be assimilated, she is transported two thousand light-years away. The beings in the cluster control a quantum slipstream, a form of instantaneous transportation. The Einstein, cut off from the Borg collective, must not be allowed to rejoin it, as the Borg cannot be permitted to access slipstream technology. Starfleet Command grants Captain Picard full authority to protect the beings and stop the Einstein at any cost.
