About “The Dead Republic”
The Dead Republic is the final novel in Roddy Doyle's trilogy featuring Henry Smart, an Irish rebel who returns to Ireland in 1951 after a stint in Hollywood. There, he works on the film The Quiet Man, which he finds overly sentimental. He ends his partnership with director John Ford and later works as a caretaker in a village north of Dublin. He begins a relationship with Missus O'Kelly, whom he suspects might be his lost wife, Miss O'Shea. After being injured in a 1974 political bombing in Dublin, his past as a rebel is revealed, making him a national hero. The novel explores his life with humor, drama, and emotional depth.
