About “Oh, Play That Thing (Jack Crossman Adventures)”
The second book in Roddy Doyle's trilogy about Henry Smart continues his story in 1924 as he flees Dublin and finds himself in New York. There, he works with a sandwich board to hide hooch for speakeasies in the Lower East Side. His talent and good looks draw the attention of local mobsters, forcing him to move on. He travels to Chicago, where the city is full of energy and music. Louis Armstrong's trumpet music fills the air, but Armstrong faces racial restrictions. He needs a white ally, and he chooses Henry Smart.
