Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik have narrowly escaped the attacks on Heimdall station and are now crammed with 2,000 refugees aboard the container ship Mao, with resources scarce and Kerenza's fate unknown seven months after invasion. Meanwhile Kady's cousin Asha, a survivor of the initial BeiTech assault, has joined Kerenza's underground resistance, and finds herself opposite an old flame, Rhys, when he reappears. A final battle is waged on land and in space.
