The story is told through the perspectives of three women—Daisy, Agnes, and Lydia. Daisy comes to terms with her past and her true identity. Agnes shares her experiences living under Gilead's regime. Lydia reflects on her life and the choices she made. The novel answers questions about Gilead's inner workings and the fate of characters from the previous book. Atwood wrote the story in response to readers' questions and the world she has observed.
