Sophocles's play follows Deianira, the anxious wife of Heracles, who has waited long for her wandering husband's return. When she learns he is bringing home a captive woman as a rival, she recalls a love charm given to her years before by the dying centaur Nessus, and decides to use it to win back his affection.
