The third book in Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest series follows Thomas of Hookton, who continues his quest for the holy grail. In 1347, after the English capture Calais, Thomas is sent to Gascony to confront his enemy, Guy Vexille. He leads raids but is later hunted by the church. With only a heretic girl as a companion, he travels to the valley of Astarac, believing the grail may be hidden there. He faces his enemy but is interrupted by a deadly plague that transforms the land into a death zone. The grail's significance as a sign of God's favor becomes more urgent.
