Harry Dresden, Chicago's preeminent wizard, deals with his new roommate, his vampire half-brother Thomas, while facing a greater threat. Marva, a vampire foe, threatens to frame Harry's friend Karrin Murphy for murder unless Harry obtains the Word of Kemmler. Harry does not know what the Word is, but he soon learns that necromancers, students of the evil wizard Kemmler, have come to Chicago. They seek the Word to summon the powerful creature the Erlking. As Harry tries to uncover the Word's meaning and stop Marva, the story builds suspense and ends with a thrilling conclusion.
