About “The road to Los Angeles”

The narrator worked many jobs in Los Angeles Harbor due to financial hardship after his father's death. His first job was ditchdigging shortly after high school graduation. The work was physically demanding, causing him pain and keeping him awake at night. He worked in an empty lot under a cloudless sky with two coworkers who enjoyed the work, laughing and smoking tobacco while they dug.
