About “Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar”
Lieutenant Albert Werper was spared from being discharged from the military but sent to a remote Congo post, where he faced months of isolation and loneliness. Initially grateful, he soon fell into self-pity and resentment. His thoughts turned against those who had sent him there, particularly his captain. He longed for the lively life he had left behind in Brussels, and his bitterness grew as he dwelled on his misfortune. The novel explores his emotional decline and growing hatred toward the authority that had exiled him.
