About “The Tale of Old Mortality”
Old Mortality is a Waverley novel by Walter Scott, set in south west Scotland. It is part of the first series of his Tales of My Landlord, along with The Black Dwarf. The story focuses on the Covenanters, a religious group, and includes their victory at Loudoun Hill and their defeat at Bothwell Bridge, both occurring in June 1679. A final section of the novel takes place in 1689, during the royalist defeat at Killiecrankie. The book explores historical events and the struggles of the Covenanters during this period.
