In this 2005 novel by Richard K. Morgan, twenty-fifth-century mercenary Takeshi Kovacs, wounded and drinking in a New Hokkaido bar, intervenes when holy men descend on a woman with tangled, hyperwired hair, drawing him into danger. The woman may be Quellcrist Falconer, a symbol of a lost freedom on Harlan's World, and Kovacs must face AI, biomachines, a missing weapons system, a yakuza blood feud, betrayal, and an enemy who is himself, younger and stronger.
