The Starship Titan continues its journey beyond Federation space, with Captain William Riker and the crew committed to Starfleet’s mission of exploration. While traveling at warp, the Titan hits a spatial distortion, known as a "sandbank," which knocks the ship out of warp. The crew finds themselves in the wreckage of a destroyed ship, with no survivors. An away team retrieves the ship’s computer core, which is revealed to be a sentient artificial intelligence. The AI, named SecondGen White-Blue, comes from a civilization of sentient computers that have been at war with a force called The Null for eons. The Null is a destructive force that consumes everything in its path. The AIs have been trying to stop it, but they are distrustful of organics. When the Titan offers help, the AIs are reluctant. As the battle against The Null intensifies, the force is gaining ground and threatens to destroy the entire system and spread into Federation space.
