About “Bílá nemoc”
Unlike many of Čapek's other plays, this one is marked by anguish and fear rather than hope, telling of a dictatorship overcome by an illness it cannot control. It was written in the late 1930s, shortly before the Munich Agreement placed much of Czechoslovakia under Nazi control, and was first performed in 1937.
