About “Shaman's Crossing”

The 2005 novel by Robin Hobb follows Young Nevare Burvelle, the second son of a second son in Gernia, where the firstborn inherits family fortune, the second joins the cavalry, and the third becomes a priest. Nevare is expected to follow his father into the cavalry and settle into a prosperous life. For twenty years, Gernia's cavalry has expanded the frontier, reaching the Barrier Mountains, home to the Specks—forest-dwelling people who still practice magic. The 'civilised' people view the Specks as primitive and dangerous, spreading superstitions about them. Nevare's training at the Academy is complicated by his status as the son of a 'new noble,' leading to segregation and discrimination. He also faces challenges from his unconventional cousin Epiny and strange dreams. His life changes when the circus arrives in Old Thares, bringing the first Specks he has ever seen.
