In a society permitting only two children per family on penalty of death, third children hide or live under false identities. Nina Idi was arrested for allegedly trying to trick the Population Police into arresting students she claimed were third children. She now faces torture or death unless she betrays three other imprisoned third children, a choice made harder when she meets them and finds they are only ten, nine, and six.
