Pryn, a writer from a pre-literate mountain village, flees on the back of a dragon in search of Neveryona, a legendary lost civilization. Along her journey, she meets various characters and helps lead a slave revolt led by Gorgik. The story is part of the "Return to Neveryon" series, a science fiction and fantasy collection of eleven tales. These stories are set in a fictional empire and explore the life of Gorgik, a former slave who becomes a leader and abolishes slavery. The series, originally published in four volumes between 1979 and 1987, includes a variety of protagonists and interconnected narratives. This particular volume, Neveryona or: The Tale of Signs and Cities, is the second in the series. It also includes two appendices: a short story by Samuel R. Delany and an essay acknowledging contributors.
