Extremes is the second book in the Retrieval Artist series by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. The novels are set in a future where humans have colonized many distant worlds. Treaties with alien races allow for the extradition of humans to other worlds to stand trial. Because many of these crimes carry a death sentence, an industry has developed to help people disappear. These people are called the Disappeared. Some hide from alien justice, others from human justice, and some simply want to escape their past. Two professions exist to find the disappeared: Trackers, who locate them for justice or payment, and Retrieval Artists, who are often hired by lawyers to locate people for inheritance purposes.
