Christopher Tietjens, a brilliant mathematician, is troubled by his disastrous marriage to the beautiful and unfaithful Sylvia. He spends a golfing weekend in the country at the suggestion of his friend Macmaster, where he meets Valentine Wannop, a suffragette. Although they are attracted to each other, Tietjens refuses to betray Sylvia, despite her betrayal of him. As the War begins, the moral and social order that Tietjens has relied on is destroyed, along with his sense of self. The novel explores the collapse of his world and the personal turmoil he faces.
