Doomsday Book is a 1992 novel by Connie Willis. It is the first book in her Oxford trilogy. The story follows Kivrin, an ordinary history student who travels back in time as part of her university degree. She is well-versed in the Middle Ages and aware of its dangers, including disease, violence, and death. When her tutors allow her to go on an on-site study trip, she eagerly accepts. However, a crisis connects the past and future, leaving her stranded in a dangerous and deadly era. There, she faces the harsh reality of history beyond the books. While struggling to survive, she becomes a source of hope for those around her. The novel explores themes of human nature, suffering, and resilience.
