Humans expanded into space but faced a universe filled with alien species determined to destroy them. To protect against this threat, the Colonial Union was formed, using Earth's excess population as colonists and soldiers. This arrangement benefited the Colonial Union, but Earth eventually refused to participate further. Now the Colonial Union has only a couple of decades before its military is depleted and human colonies become vulnerable to alien attacks. Another threat emerges: a group in space manipulating humans and aliens against each other for unknown motives. CDF Lieutenant Harry Wilson and Colonial Union diplomats work to uncover the source of attacks, seek peace with Earth, and keep the union together before it collapses. The book includes several novellas and alternate scenes. It is a 2015 novel by John Scalzi.
