About “1876”
1876 is the third novel in Gore Vidal's series of historical fiction that challenges traditional views of American history. The story takes place in the year of the nation's centennial and explores the political scandals and secret dealings that shaped the country during this period. The main character, Charles Schermerhorn Schuyler, is the unacknowledged son of Aaron Burr. After years in Europe, he returns to the United States to regain his fortune. He aims to arrange a good marriage for his daughter, the widowed Princess d'Agrigente, and to gain favor with Samuel Tilden, a leading presidential candidate. Through his ambitions and charm, Schuyler and his daughter become involved in the political and social life of a nation in transition.
