In the six months since Anthony, Lucy, and George survived a night in the most haunted house in England, Lockwood & Co. has made little progress. Quill Kipps and his team from Fittes continue to interfere with Lockwood's investigations. After a confrontation, Anthony challenges Kipps to a contest: the losing side will admit defeat in the Times. A new client, Mr. Saunders, hires Lockwood & Co. to oversee the excavation of Dr. Edmund Bickerstaff, a Victorian doctor known for trying to communicate with the dead. Saunders wants the coffin sealed with silver to prevent supernatural trouble. The job starts smoothly, but George's curiosity draws a terrifying phantom. Back at Portland Row, Lockwood criticizes George for careless mistakes, while Lucy is troubled by whispers from a skull in a ghost jar. They are then called to DEPRAC headquarters, where Kipps is also present. Bickerstaff's coffin was broken into, and a strange glass object buried with the corpse has disappeared. Inspector Barnes believes the object is dangerous and wants it found.
