The Talamasca, a group that documents paranormal activity, is searching for the newly born Lasher. Mayfair women are dying from hemorrhages, and a genetic anomaly has been discovered in Rowan and Michael. Lasher, born from Rowan, is a different species and now has a physical form, posing a serious threat to the Mayfairs. Rowan and Lasher go to Houston, and she becomes pregnant with a Taltos. Lasher wants to create more of his kind, but other women cannot survive the process. Rowan escapes and falls into a coma as her Taltos daughter is born. The Mayfairs start a war against Lasher and try to recover Rowan's health. Michael stays connected to the Mayfair family and discovers the source of his powers. A ghost from a long-dead Mayfair tells him the importance of destroying Lasher. As the investigation continues, Lasher's origins are uncovered, and the returning Taltos Emaleth leads to a climax involving death and life for the family.
