The Ingalls family, in debt at Plum Creek, Minnesota, with Mary now blind, moves as Pa goes to work at a railroad camp in Dakota Territory, becoming the first settlers in the new town of De Smet, though the railroad soon brings hordes of land-hungry people from the East.
