About “Germinal”
Germinal is the thirteenth novel in Émile Zola's Rougon-Macquart series. It highlights the exploitation of the working class and the struggles of the poor. The main character, Etienne Lantier, is an unemployed railway worker who takes a dangerous job at Le Voreux mine. There, he finds his fellow miners suffering from hunger, illness, and debt. As conditions worsen, Lantier leads a strike that could bring either survival or further hardship to the community. The novel portrays both the harsh realities of labor and the potential for human solidarity.
