About “Diagrammatic representation and inference”

Although diagrammatic representations have been part of human communication since early history, recent advances in printing and electronic media have led to more complex visual representations in daily life. There is a need to better understand the role of diagrams and sketches in communication, thinking, and problem-solving. This has increased interest in studying diagrammatic notations, especially in fields related to cognition, computation, and communication. The Diagrams conference series was created to support an international research community focused on this topic. After events in Edinburgh in 2000 and Georgia in 2002, Diagrams 2004 was the third conference. The series brings together many researchers from various academic fields who study diagrammatic representations, their use in communication, and the mechanisms for processing them. It combines earlier workshops and symposiums held in the US and Europe.
