Two species, humans and the winged Ooloms, lived in peace on the planet Demoth until a deadly plague killed millions of Ooloms while leaving humans unharmed. Faye Smallwood witnessed the tragedy while working in her father's hospital, where he discovered a cure that made him famous. He later died in a freak accident. Faye joined the Vigil, a group of independent monitors fighting government corruption, and her mind is linked to the planet's datasphere. She receives a cryptic vision of peace, but soon becomes a target of assassins involved in a conspiracy that could trigger a new outbreak. Faye learns that Demoth was once home to other species, and ancient alien technology may hold the key to the mystery. She turns to Festina Ramos, an outcast explorer, to help uncover the truth.
