About “Hard as nails”

Ex-PI Joe Kurtz survives an ambush that leaves him severely injured and his parole officer, Peg O'Toole, critically wounded. Both have plenty of enemies due to their professions, making it difficult to identify the attacker. Kurtz suspects two powerful figures: Angelina Farino Ferrara, the leader of the Farino crime family, and Toma Gonzaga, her mob rival. Both seem to want Kurtz alive rather than dead, suggesting a deeper conflict is at play. The situation grows more complicated as the mobs and the police become involved, leaving Kurtz caught in the middle of a dangerous game with no clear enemy.
