Chief Inspector Morse wakes to the calm presence of Reason, which urges him to examine the problem carefully before rushing to a solution. He is the only one in the parish of St Frideswide's who suspects ongoing unrest. The murder of the churchwarden and the subsequent suicide of the accused are still fresh in the memories of a few. The police have closed the case, but a chance encounter among the tombstones uncovers new evidence suggesting a conspiracy to deceive.
