Captain Honor Harrington, once a respected military leader, has withdrawn to the planet Grayson after being forced into retirement and suffering great personal loss. She now serves as Steadholder while trying to recover from her emotional wounds. However, the People's Republic of Haven is regaining strength and threatening Grayson again. The newly formed Grayson Navy needs her expertise, and Honor feels compelled to return to duty. At the same time, powerful figures who oppose the changes she has introduced are determined to undo her work. They have a plan to kill her.
