Germany, 1659: when a dying boy is pulled from the river marked with a tattoo, hangman Jakob Kuisl must investigate whether witchcraft is at play in his Bavarian town, still haunted by memories of witch trials decades earlier. As more children disappear and are found dead with the same mark, Jakob and his daughter Magdalena, with the physician's son Simon, must uncover the truth before more blood is shed.
