Zachary Davriel Hillander, High King of Sacoridia, struggles with the sacrifices he has made as ruler, including the loss of personal freedom and love. When an embassy from Eletia asks for a joint mission to find an old ally in the north, Zachary is forced to send Karigan G'ladheon, a Green Rider and the woman he loves but cannot be with. Karigan has recently returned from a dark future where Sacoridia is ruled by an emperor. She is still recovering from her traumatic experiences, and the castle ghosts continue to haunt her. Despite his reluctance, Zachary knows she is the best choice for the mission. As Karigan and her companions travel north, they face dangers from the Second Empire, Sacoridia’s enemy. Grandmother, the empire’s leader, uses magic to summon a wild elemental spirit that attacks Zachary and Queen Estora. The spirit abducts Zachary, assuming his form and taking his place beside Estora. When the spirit is defeated, Zachary is missing, leaving Estora alone and pregnant with twins. Meanwhile, Karigan faces greater dangers as she journeys north, trying to rescue her king before falling into a trap set by Grandmother.
